Journalist Anis Alamgir granted bail
A court has granted bail to journalist Anis Alamgir in the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) case over illegal wealth accumulation and money laundering, removing barriers to his release.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md. Sabbir Foyez passed the bail order on Wednesday (March 11).
Anis Alamgir’s lawyer, Taslima Jahan Popy, represented him during the hearing and confirmed that with bail granted in both cases, "There is no legal obstacle to his release."
Earlier, Alamgir had obtained bail on March 5 from the High Court in a terrorism-related case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act by Uttara West Police Station. On March 8, however, the ACC’s plea had revoked his bail in the illegal wealth case.
Alamgir was first taken into custody on December 14 last year by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) after leaving a gym in Dhanmondi. He was later implicated in a terrorism case filed with the capital's Uttara West Police Station by Arian Ahmed, a member of the organisation “July Revolutionary Alliance,” accusing him and three others—including actress Meher Afroz Shawon, fashion model Maria Kispotta, and presenter Imtu Ratish Imtiaz—of conspiring to undermine state stability.
According to the ACC case, Alamgir owns Tk 4.09 crore in movable and immovable assets, while his legally declared income totals Tk 99.09 lakh, leaving Tk 3.26 crore (77% of assets) unaccounted for, considered illicit wealth.
Alamgir, known for his work with Dainik Ajker Kagoj and other media outlets, has often sparked debate through television talk shows and social media posts on contemporary politics.
