Journalist Anis Alamgir remains in jail despite bail order

Journalist Anis Alamgir has not been released from jail despite being granted bail by the court, as the bail papers have not yet reached Dhaka Central Jail. However, he is expected to be released on Thursday, March 12.

Senior Jail Super Faruk Ahmed of Dhaka Central Jail said on Wednesday, March 11, that Anis Alamgir's bail papers had not been received until 7:30 pm. Once the papers arrive, they will be sent to Kashimpur Central Jail-2, following which he will be released from prison.

It is to be noted that a Dhaka court granted him bail on Wednesday in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Anis Alamgir's lawyer Taslima Jahan said with him securing bail in both cases against him, there is now no legal bar to his release.

On December 14 last year, he was picked up from a gymnasium in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, by the Detective Branch (DB) and was arrested the following day in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Uttara West Police Station. After a five-day remand, he was sent to jail. On March 5, the High Court granted him bail.
