Several hundred activists of the banned Awami League attempted to bring out a procession chanting “Joy Bangla” in Dhaka’s Gulshan on Friday (September 11), triggering clashes with police and two cocktail explosions.

The incident took place around 11:45am near Bhola Mosque in Gulshan-1, Gulshan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Daud Hossain said.

Police moved to disperse the procession as the activists tried to march from the area. The protesters then detonated two cocktails, prompting police to fire two rounds of rubber bullets to bring the situation under control, the OC said.

Videos circulating on social media showed hundreds of people chanting “Joy Bangla” during the attempted procession as police fired rubber bullets to disperse them.

Police arrested two people from the scene and recovered five cocktails, Daud Hossain said.
