Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Bangladesh JSD) has described the August 15 assassination of 1975 as an “indelible stain” on the country’s history, while announcing a programme to pay tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the anniversary.

In a statement issued Friday (August 14), the party said its leaders and activists will pay tribute to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at its central office on Topkhana Road in Dhaka at 5pm on Saturday.

Bangladesh JSD strongly condemned the killings of August 15, 1975, saying the memory of what it described as a brutal episode in the country’s history cannot be erased and will remain a deep and lasting wound.

The party said merely observing the anniversary or holding formal mourning programmes would not be enough to address the historical tragedy. Establishing the rule of law, ensuring justice and strengthening democratic values are essential to preventing similar incidents from recurring, it said.

Bangladesh JSD also stressed the need for an objective assessment of major events in the country’s political history and called for state institutions to function within a democratic framework and uphold the rule of law.

Through Saturday’s programme, the party said it would both honour Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and remember those killed in the August 15 assassination.
