JU student expelled over "adverse" remarks on July movement

Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have temporarily expelled a student over allegations of making adverse remarks on social media about the July uprising and of ties to the banned organization Chhatra League. A five-member committee has also been formed to investigate the allegations, and university authorities have filed a case against the accused student at Ashulia police station.

The information was disclosed in two separate office orders signed by the university's acting registrar, Dr. A B M Azizur Rahman.

The expelled student is Sharafat Sharik, a student of the 54th batch (academic year 2024-25) of the Department of Archaeology. He is a resident student of Sher-e-Bangla A K Fazlul Huq Hall. He has been temporarily expelled under section 4(1)(kha) of the "Jahangirnagar University Students' Discipline Ordinance-2018."

In a separate order, the university said a five-member investigation committee has been formed to look into the allegations of adverse and objectionable remarks about the July mass uprising on social media, the allegation of ties to the banned organization, and to identify the individual(s) involved and uncover the full details of the incident.

Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Halim of the Department of Botany has been made chairman of the investigation committee. Its members include Professor Dr. Abu Sayed Md. Mostafizur Rahman of the Department of CSE, Professor Dr. Md. Kamruzzaman of the Department of Zoology, and Md. Rezaul Alam, System Analyst of the ICT Cell. Dr. Abduch Sattar, Associate Professor of the Department of Philosophy, will serve as member secretary.

The university administration has instructed the committee to complete its investigation and submit a report with clear recommendations within the next 15 working days.

Meanwhile, late Wednesday night, university authorities filed a case against the accused student at Ashulia police station under the Cyber Security Ordinance, 2025.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ashulia police station, Mohammad Tariqul Islam, said the case filed by the university administration has been recorded. The accused has been sent to court, and the investigation into the case is ongoing.
