JU punishes 10 teachers over July movement allegations

The Jahangirnagar University (JU) administration has decided to send one teacher into forced retirement and impose various punishments on nine others over allegations of involvement in attacks during the July 2024 movement. The decisions were taken at a syndicate meeting held early Tuesday morning, June 16.

According to syndicate sources, complaints were filed against 19 teachers and two officials for their alleged involvement in and support of the attacks during the July movement.

At the syndicate meeting, one teacher was sent into forced retirement, nine teachers and one official were demoted in rank and salary, two teachers were issued warnings, and seven teachers and one official were acquitted of the allegations.

Additionally, the university administration had earlier punished 189 leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League on August 4 last year for their involvement in the attacks on students during the movement. Following appeals from many of those punished, the syndicate re-evaluated the sentences of 43 students.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan said among the 21 students who were previously rusticated permanently, five have been fully acquitted. Among the rest, eight had their sentences reduced to two years, and five to one year. Of the eight students who received a two-year rustication, six were fully acquitted. Among the 12 students whose certificates were cancelled, five were fully acquitted. The cancellation period for four others has been reduced to one year.
