Jubo Dal president calls for removal of 'Islami' from Jamaat's name

Abdul Monayem Munna, President of the Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, has called for the word "Islami" to be removed from the name of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, following the recent controversy surrounding Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam.

Munna made the remarks in a post on his verified Facebook page on Wednesday (22 July).

In the post, he referred to a recent speech in Parliament by Home Affairs Adviser Salahuddin, describing him as "an erudite politician" who speaks "politely and with restraint". According to Munna, Salahuddin had said that "Jamaat-e-Islami does not represent Islam."

Munna wrote that recent events, including what he described as the "moral misconduct" of some Jamaat leaders, had reinforced that view. He added that he believed it had become necessary to remove the word "Islami" from the party's name.

The controversy began after several videos showing private moments involving Gazi Nazrul Islam were widely circulated on social media on Monday night, prompting widespread public discussion.

Following an internal investigation, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami announced on Wednesday that it had expelled Gazi Nazrul from the party, stating that allegations of moral misconduct against him had been substantiated.

The party subsequently called on Gazi Nazrul to resign from Parliament and said that, if he refused to do so, it would write to the Speaker of Parliament and the Election Commission seeking the cancellation of his parliamentary seat.
