A court has ordered the imprisonment of arrested Jubo Mohila League leader Shilpi Begum in an explosives case filed at Tejgaon Police Station in the capital. Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Aulad Hossain Muhammad Jonaid rejected her bail application after a hearing on Tuesday, April 21.

She was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Dhaka around 2:00 pm. The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Sheikh Nazrul Islam, submitted that there is sufficient evidence against the accused and that she needs to remain in custody until the investigation is complete.

Shilpi Begum was arrested from her residence in the Railway Colony area of Tejgaon Police Station around 7:15 pm on Monday based on secret information. Investigation has revealed that she played an active role in suppressing the anti-discrimination student movement.

Her lawyer, Farzana Yasmin Rakhi, sought bail on humanitarian grounds, stating that Shilpi Begum has a one-and-a-half-month-old child and recently underwent a caesarean operation. However, the court rejected the application.

While being taken from the court at 3:12 pm, Shilpi Begum was crying. Her one-and-a-half-month-old child was placed in her lap. She breastfed the child while sitting on the court veranda before being taken to the lockup with the child. She claimed she was being sent to jail with her child for political reasons.

According to case details, Dhaka University student Md Tahmid Mubin Ratul was shot during the anti-discrimination student movement. Shilpi Begum and 120-130 unidentified others were accused in a case involving attack, vandalism, looting and bomb explosions at his residence. There are also allegations of beating the victim's father, Md Sohel Rana, with intent to kill.

The case was filed at Tejgaon Police Station on January 25, 2025.
