JUCSU elections: Vote counting for 15 halls completed, final results expected by 1 pm

Vote counting for the Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) election has entered its final phase, with results for 15 halls already counted. The university’s Election Commission expects to complete the entire vote counting process by 1pm today.


The election, held after a long hiatus, has drawn significant attention from students, with voter turnout reported between 67 to 68 percent.


Election Commission member Professor Lutful Elahi confirmed on Saturday morning (September 13) that vote counting for 15 of the university's 21 residential halls has been completed.


He expressed optimism that the remaining counts would be finalized by early afternoon. The counting began on Thursday and continued over three days. Counting for the Hall Sangsad was completed late Friday night.


Chief Election Commissioner Professor Md. Moniruzzaman stated that the final results for both the JUCSU central parliament and the individual Hall Sangsad elections will be announced once counting concludes.


He noted that the Commission aims to publish the official results later tonight. University Proctor and Member Secretary of the Election Commission AKM Rashidul Alam added that the results may be privately available between 10pm and 11pm.


This year, a total of 11,743 students were eligible to vote. Among the male student halls, the number of voters included: Al Beruni Hall (210), AFM Kamaluddin Hall (333), Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall (464), Shaheed Salam-Barkat Hall (298), Maulana Bhashani Hall (514), Student No. 10 Hall (522), Shaheed Rafiq-Jabbar Hall (650), Vishwakabi Rabindranath Tagore Hall (350), Student No. 21 Hall (735), National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall (992), and Tajuddin Ahmed Hall (947). Among the female student halls, voters included: Nawab Faizunnesa Hall (279), Jahanara Imam Hall (367), Pritilata Hall (396), Begum Khaleda Zia Hall (403), Sufia Kamal Hall (456), Student No. 13 Hall (519), Student No. 15 Hall (571), Rokeya Hall (956), Fazilatunnesa Hall (798), and Taramon Bibi Hall (983).


In the central parliament election, 177 candidates contested for 25 posts. Of them, nine ran for the position of Vice President (VP) and eight for General Secretary (GS). In the Hall Sangsad elections, out of 150 posts in the 10 female residential halls, there were no candidates for 59 posts.


Additionally, 67 posts had a single candidate and were uncontested, leading to voting for only 24 posts. In two of the 21 halls, all candidates were elected unopposed.
