Judges responsible for bail granted to Awami League criminals: Law Adviser

Law Adviser Professor Dr Asif Nazrul has said that judges are responsible for granting bail to some Awami League 'criminals'. He stated that, in such cases, it was the responsibility of the Chief Justice to remove the judges concerned.

While the role of the Chief Justice during the Awami League’s rule had previously been criticised, he questioned why the issue is not being discussed now.

He made the remarks at a dialogue on political parties, human rights and freedom of expression held at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital on Saturday (10 January).

Referring to allegations that he is being held responsible for bail granted by the High Court, Asif Nazrul said that when the verdict abolishing the caretaker government system was delivered, the then Chief Justice Khairul Haque did not blame the Law Minister. Nor was the Law Minister held accountable for the controversial actions of Shamsuddin Manik. He questioned why the Law Adviser is now being blamed for matters in which he has no involvement and over which he has no authority.

He also said there are two reasons behind attempts to blame him. First, it increases views, business and monetisation. Second, he claimed there is an effort to weaken him to advance a particular political agenda.

He further said that at least three to four advisers of the interim government had, at different times, wanted to resign. The reasons, he explained, include continuous unjust attacks, criticism, obscene abuse and fear of threats to life, which make working conditions extremely difficult. However, at the request of the Chief Adviser, they continue to carry out their duties.

Asif Nazrul said that as long as he remains in Bangladesh, he will continue to answer all questions and fulfil his responsibilities.
