July Martyrs' Day today
July Martyrs' Day is being observed across the country today, July 16, in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the 2024 anti-quota movement, with special tribute to Begum Rokeya University student Abu Sayed, who was fatally shot by police in Rangpur on this day.
Following a government gazette notification, July 16 has been included in the national list of observance days as a Category-B state-recognised occasion, ensuring its official observance every year.
Marking the day, President Md. Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued separate messages paying tribute to the martyrs and expressing solidarity with the injured and bereaved families.
In his message, the President remembered those who were wounded during the movement, many of whom continue to live with permanent disabilities, while extending condolences to the families of the martyrs. He said the July uprising was "the collective aspiration, courage and sacrifice of democracy-loving people, not the achievement of any individual or political group."
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman described July 16 as "a defining moment in the nation's history," saying the fearless resistance of unarmed students and citizens against state repression awakened the conscience of the nation.
He said the image of Abu Sayed standing with his arms outstretched in defiance had become a lasting symbol of courage and the struggle for democratic rights.
To mark the occasion, the Bangladesh Madrasah Education Board has instructed all affiliated madrasas to organise remembrance programmes, prayers and special munajat.
Educational institutions across the country are also observing the day through discussions and commemorative events honouring the martyrs of the July movement.
