July uprising trials: 16 get death, 11 life term in 6 cases

The International Crimes Tribunal has delivered verdicts in six cases related to crimes against humanity committed during the July-August 2024 student-people's uprising. The verdicts handed down death sentences to a total of 16 individuals and life imprisonment to 11 others. The remaining accused were given various prison terms.

First verdict: On November 17, 2025, Tribunal-1 sentenced deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death. Former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, a prosecution witness, was sentenced to five years in prison. The court also ordered the confiscation of Sheikh Hasina and Kamal's assets.

Second verdict: On January 26, 2026, Tribunal-1 sentenced three police officers, including former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, to death over the killing of six people at Chankharpul. Five other police personnel were given various prison terms.

Third verdict: On February 5, 2026, Tribunal-2 sentenced six people, including former MP Muhammad Saiful Islam, to death over the burning of six bodies and the killing of one person in Ashulia. Seven others were given life imprisonment.

Fourth verdict: On April 9, 2026, Tribunal-2 sentenced two accused to death and three to life imprisonment over the killing of Abu Sayeed in Rangpur. The remaining 25 accused were given various prison terms.

Fifth verdict: On June 28, Tribunal-1 sentenced three people, including former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, to death and one to life imprisonment over the killing of three people, including a youth found hanging from a railing in Rampura. The only arrested accused was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Sixth verdict: On June 30, Tribunal-2 sentenced Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasad) President Hasanul Haq Inu to 10 years in prison. The verdict was delivered on charges of command responsibility over the killing of six people in Kushtia.

The judicial process at the International Crimes Tribunal relating to the July-August uprising began on May 26, 2025, when formal charges in the Chankharpul case were taken into cognisance.
