Justice Khairul Haque granted bail, no bar to release

The High Court has granted bail to former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque in an attempted murder case filed with Banani Police Station in Dhaka. Following the bail in this case, there is no longer any legal bar to his release, lawyers said.

The bench of Justice KM Jahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order on Monday, August 10, after hearing his bail petition. Senior lawyer Mansurul Haq Chowdhury and Advocate Motahar Hossain Saju argued for Khairul Haque in court.

Lawyers said the former chief justice was already on bail in the Khoyab murder case filed with Jatrabari Police Station. He was later shown arrested in the attempted murder case at Banani Police Station. With bail granted in that case today, there is no further bar to his release.

Earlier, on July 2, the Appellate Division's Chamber Court had upheld Khairul Haque's bail in the Khoyab murder case filed with Jatrabari Police Station. The High Court had granted him bail in the same case on June 30, and the state had appealed to the Appellate Division seeking a stay of that order.

So far, the former chief justice has secured bail in a total of seven cases.

According to the Khoyab murder case complaint, on August 5, 2024, Khoyab had taken position under the Jatrabari Overbridge to participate in the anti-discrimination student movement. Around 11am that day, when protesters advanced towards Jatrabari intersection, gunfire was allegedly opened on them. Khoyab was critically injured and later declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Nearly three months later, on November 16, 2024, Khoyab's brother Jobayer Ahmed filed a murder case with Jatrabari Police Station, naming former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 80 others as accused.

On July 24, 2025, Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police arrested Khairul Haque from his Dhanmondi residence and later showed him arrested in multiple cases. On May 23, after securing bail in seven separate cases, he was also shown arrested in the Khoyab murder case.
