Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury to take oath as chief justice today

Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury is set to be sworn in as Bangladesh’s 26th Chief Justice on Sunday (December 28).

Supreme Court Public Relations Officer Md. Shafiqul Islam told Views Bangladesh that President Md. Sahabuddin will administer the oath to Justice Chowdhury at Bangabhaban this morning.

Justice Chowdhury’s appointment was confirmed through a presidential notification signed by Law Secretary Md Liakat Ali Mollah on December 20, under Article 95(1) of the Constitution.

The appointment takes effect from the date of the oath.

Justice Chowdhury earned his LLB (Honours) and LLM degrees from the University of Dhaka and later completed an LLM in international law in the United Kingdom.

He began his legal career in 1985 as a judge court lawyer and in 1987 was enrolled as a lawyer in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court. He was appointed an additional judge of the High Court Division on August 27, 2003, during the BNP government and became a permanent judge two years later. On August 12, 2024, he was appointed to the Appellate Division.
