Khalilur Rahman elected president of UN General Assembly
Khalilur Rahman, foreign minister of Bangladesh, has been elected president of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The result was announced on Tuesday following the formal election held at the UN General Assembly Hall at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
He was elected to this prestigious position for a one-year term, defeating Cyprus' Special Envoy for Multilateralism, Ambassador Andreas Kakouris.
The voting began at 10 am local time in New York. Khalilur Rahman entered the UN Headquarters at around 9:15 am to participate. He was accompanied by Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir.
According to the established regional rotation rules, the President of this session was to be elected from the Asia-Pacific Group. Cyprus' Ambassador Andreas Kakouris competed with Khalilur Rahman for the position.
As the newly elected president, Khalilur Rahman will serve as the president of the UN General Assembly for the next year. He will succeed the current president and former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
