Language Movement veteran Amena Ahmed passes away
Language Movement veteran and organiser of the Liberation War, Amena Ahmed, has passed away. She was 90 years old.
She breathed her last around 11:00 am on Saturday, March 28, while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital. She was the wife of late Professor Mozaffar Ahmed, adviser to the provisional government. She leaves behind her only daughter, Ivy Rahman, along with countless political comrades and admirers.
Various political parties and organisations, including NAP, the Communist Party and Chhatra Union, have expressed deep shock and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
NAP Presidium member Kazi Siddiqur Rahman said she will be buried beside her husband Mozaffar Ahmed in the Elahabad village of Debidwar upazila in Cumilla after a guard of honour and state funeral following Maghrib prayers on Saturday.
Amena Ahmed actively participated in the 1952 Language Movement while studying at Eden College and later played a significant role as an organiser of the Liberation War. During her student life, she was a leader of Chhatra Union and vice-president of the Eden College Students' Union. She also served as a member of parliament from the reserved women's seat in 2009 and 2014. She was president of NAP's central committee and a member of the current executive committee's presidium.
