Law and order has worsened: Home affairs adviser
Home Affairs and Agriculture Adviser Lieutenant General (retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has acknowledged that the law and order situation in the country has deteriorated in recent days.
He made the remark on Sunday (September 7) when responding to journalists’ questions following the opening ceremony of an election training programme held at the Rajarbagh Police Line.
Asked about the current state of law and order, the adviser said: “While the situation remained stable for a long time, recent incidents suggest it has shifted for the worse. We are committed to restoring it to its previous state.”
Regarding the unrest in Rajbari and whether there was any international involvement aimed at disrupting the election, the adviser explained: “We are investigating the Rajbari incident. Once our report is complete, we can provide details. The matter is under inquiry, but we have already brought five people involved under legal custody. Continued interrogation should reveal the full picture.”
When questioned whether the district commissioner and superintendent of police, accused of negligence, should remain in charge of the investigation, the adviser replied: “We must await the outcome before assigning blame. Removing them now would compromise the process. Post-investigation, action will follow if they are found guilty.”
Addressing concerns about failure to prevent mob attacks, including one in Hathazari the previous day, he assured: “We are not failing. Anyone responsible will be brought to justice under the law. One thing to remember, we have become less tolerant as a society. I urge everyone to keep patience.”
