Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said the country’s law and order situation has shown visible improvement within just 13 days of the BNP-led government assuming office.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Secretariat on Sunday (March 1) following a meeting with officials of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, the minister said the government has adopted a zero-tolerance stance against crime.

“No criminal is being spared,” he said, adding that suspects involved in the recent brutal murder in Narsingdi were arrested within 24 hours.

He also noted that all individuals linked to a separate incident in Dhaka have been brought under the law.

Referring to a shooting at a businessman’s residence in Chattogram, the minister said swift action is underway to bring the top-listed criminals involved to justice.

On his recent meeting with Pranay Kumar Verma, the Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Salahuddin said discussions focused on ensuring border security while maintaining trade and diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Regarding the resumption of tourist visas, he said the process would be implemented gradually. He also confirmed that a legal directive has been issued concerning licensed firearms that have yet to be deposited, and a committee has been formed to review whether any licences were issued on political considerations.

The minister added that a decision on when the army will return to barracks will be taken at the highest level of government, based on the prevailing law and order situation.
