Laws to be amended to stop mob attacks: Home Minister
Initiatives will be taken to amend existing laws and make new additions to control 'mobs' or organized disorderly behavior in the country, said Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed.
He said that such violent and uncontrolled situations will be dealt with by updating the laws as soon as possible.
He said this while speaking as the chief guest at the 'Prime Minister's Special Welfare Meeting' on the occasion of Police Week 2026 organized at the Rajarbagh Police Lines Auditorium in the capital on Sunday (May 10).
The Home Minister said that the existing laws will be amended and made up-to-date with the necessary additions to completely stop mob culture. The government is in principle taking a strict stand to prevent such uncontrolled public gatherings or violence.
He claimed that there has been a visible improvement in the law and order situation in the country in the last two months. Work is underway at various levels to further stabilize the situation.
He said in the meeting that special operations are continuing against identified terrorists, extortionists and drug dealers. In addition, a committee has been formed to formulate new and modern laws to prevent gambling, online gambling, cybercrime and money laundering. Necessary laws will be formulated in the future as per the recommendations of the committee.
He also said that the government is working to make the police force more efficient, modern and people-friendly.
The Home Minister also talked about increasing various benefits for police members. He said that a special policy is being prepared for the promotion of eligible retired police members to honorary posts after long service.
Under this policy, honorary promotion opportunities may be given from constable to ASI, from ASI to SI and from SI to Inspector.
He also mentioned that the government is considering introducing 'overtime allowance' for police members performing additional duties. According to him, this will increase the morale of police members and improve the quality of service.
At the meeting, the Home Minister said that the government is working sincerely to modernize and improve police hospitals and solve the housing problem of police members.
He said that the law and order situation has improved during the current government. Instructions have been given to make the role of the police more effective in curbing terrorism and crime.
Senior officials of the Home Ministry and officers from various levels of the police were present at the meeting. At the event, the Home Minister urged the police force to fulfill its duties as per the expectations of the people.
