A legal notice has been served to the government seeking Tk 3 crore compensation for the family of Jahangirnagar University student Afsana Karim Rachi who died on the campus after being hit by a battery-run auto rickshaw recently.

Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Mohammad Humayun Kabir Pallab sent the notice on Monday (December 2).

The notice states that according to Article 32 of the Constitution, the right to life is one of the fundamental rights of a person. Due to the extreme negligence of the university authorities, the battery-powered autorickshaw entered the campus and the student died after being hit by the recklessly driven autorickshaw.

On November 19, Afsana Karim Rachi, a first-year student of the marketing department of the university, died after being seriously injured in the accident.

The notice said it is the legal responsibility of the university authorities to ensure a safe campus. It was their sole duty to take necessary measures to prevent any unwanted accidents. It is clear from the reports published in the newspapers that such accidents occurred due to the extreme negligence of the university authorities.

“According to newspaper sources, the university authorities have taken action against the security guards and some university employees for their negligence in the said accident. This shows that the negligence of the university authorities was behind the accident,” it added.
