Letters reveal betrayal, pain in MP Gazi Nazrul’s wife case

Handwritten letters recovered from the residence of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam shed light on his wife Mariam Khatun’s feelings of betrayal, relationship turmoil and emotional distress, according to reports.

Written on plain paper and official Bangladesh Parliament letterhead, the notes contain personal reflections on trust, love and the difficulties Mariam described in her relationship with Nazrul.

In one letter, Mariam described feeling defeated after entering the relationship with complete trust, only to realise that her husband was effectively on the opposing side.

Another note reflected on the pain of sharing a partner. Mariam wrote that losing someone completely was more dignified than accepting only part of a relationship, expressing her view that love could not be shared.

In a separate letter, she described herself as a pawn in a game, saying she had agreed to what she believed was friendship without realising that she was being manipulated.

Another note written on Parliament letterhead focused on trust and betrayal. Mariam wrote that her trust had enabled her to be deceived and suggested that her quiet endurance could eventually have consequences for those she held responsible.

The letters have emerged after Mariam Khatun, 19, was found hanging at a flat in NAM Bhaban in Dhaka on Sunday. Police subsequently took Nazrul and his first wife for questioning, and a case was filed over the alleged instigation of suicide.

The contents of the letters represent Mariam’s own statements and allegations, while the circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation.
