Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the government is aiming to hold local government elections by the end of this year, but if that timeline cannot be met, the polls are likely to take place in early next year.

He made the remarks while addressing to reporters after inaugurating the Divisional Rural Development Academy near the Central Bus Terminal in Rangpur on Monday (July 27).

Asked about introducing educational qualifications for candidates in local government elections, he said the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Election Commission. However, issues related to the Local Government Ministry would be discussed before taking any policy decision.

On the presidential election, Mirza Fakhrul said Acting President and Speaker Hafiz Uddin is currently discharging the responsibilities of the office, and the next presidential election will be held in accordance with the Constitution.

He added that the nomination of a presidential candidate would be decided by the respective political parties.
