Local government elections will begin in October and conclude by October 2027, Prime Minister's Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman has said.

He made the announcement at the weekly briefing on the progress of various government activities at the Secretariat on Tuesday, July 7.

The information adviser said the Election Commission is already preparing a roadmap for the local government elections.

On allegations of excessive electricity bills, he said complaints regarding high electricity bills in June would be investigated and necessary action taken.

On food safety, Dr Zahed said many chemicals are being used in food during cultivation and storage, which are harmful to health. A decision has been made to create a database of food traders by collecting their data. Along with raising awareness among those involved in the business, legal action will be taken to prevent unsafe food management.

On the cocktail explosion at an NCP rally in Savar, the adviser said those involved would be arrested and legal action taken against them.

Regarding social media comments on the July mass uprising, the adviser said it is extremely tragic to make derogatory comments about July. However, under the current legal framework, it does not fall under criminal offence. Discussions may take place on whether such comments should be considered a criminal offence.
