Low pressure forms over Bay of Bengal: Signal 3 hoisted at seaports

A low-pressure area has formed over the northwestern Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions, prompting the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) to advise four seaports to keep Local Warning Signal No. 3 hoisted due to the possibility of squally weather along the coast.

According to a weather bulletin, the low-pressure area currently lies over the northwestern Bay of Bengal and the adjoining coastal areas of Gangetic West Bengal and northern Odisha. Under its influence, squally winds may sweep across the seaports, the northern Bay of Bengal and the coastal areas of Bangladesh.

As a result, the seaports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to continue displaying Local Warning Signal No. 3.

Commenting on the system, meteorologist Afroza Sultana said she does not expect the low-pressure area to intensify into a depression at this stage.

"It may develop into a well-marked low-pressure area, but it is unlikely to have any significant impact on Bangladesh," she said. "However, rainfall may increase over the southern parts of the country, while the northern regions could experience heavier rainfall after July 28."

Meanwhile, the weather office has issued an advisory for fishing boats and trawlers operating in the Bay of Bengal. All fishing vessels in the northern Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and navigate with caution until further notice.
