A new low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal, prompting the Bangladesh Meteorological Department to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 at the country's four seaports.

Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra ports have been advised to keep the warning signal in place as squally winds may affect the sea and coastal areas.

The warning was issued on Sunday night (August 23) after the low-pressure area formed over the northwest Bay and adjoining areas. Meteorologists, however, said there is little chance of the system intensifying into a depression, meaning no major spell of heavy rainfall is expected.

Coastal areas may see increased rainfall on Monday, with intermittent showers likely in several places. Dhaka may also receive light rain from afternoon to evening, which could bring a slight drop in daytime temperatures.

Meteorologist Md Omar Faruk said the system was unlikely to bring any major change in the country’s overall weather pattern. Scattered rainfall may continue in different parts of the country this week, but prolonged rain is not expected.

He said rainfall could increase somewhat next Sunday, while another low-pressure area may develop over the Bay two days later.

The Meteorological Department said squally winds could sweep across the sea and coastal areas under the influence of the system. All fishing boats and trawlers in the north Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.

The department's storm warning centre said the low-pressure area could generate gusty winds over the seaports, north Bay and coastal areas, warranting the continuation of Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 at the four ports.

Although two depressions formed in the Bay earlier this month, neither produced significant rainfall in Bangladesh. Meteorologists expect the latest system to have a limited impact, though temporary increases in rainfall are possible in coastal areas.
