Low pressure to boost rain, but no prolonged downpour likely
A low-pressure area over the northwestern Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify, bringing increased rainfall across parts of Bangladesh over the coming days, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
However, the BMD said the system is unlikely to develop into a depression, easing concerns over another spell of prolonged nationwide heavy rain.
Meteorologist Afroza Sultana said scattered rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue, as July is typically one of the wettest months of the year. Unlike the widespread downpours seen over the past week, however, the country is not expected to experience two to three consecutive days of heavy rainfall.
The active weather system may trigger temporary squalls over the northern Bay, coastal districts and nearby sea ports. As a precaution, BMD has advised the maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra to continue displaying Local Cautionary Signal No. 3, while fishing boats and trawlers have been asked to remain close to the coast and operate with caution until further notice.
The weather office has also warned of gusty winds reaching 45–60 km/h, accompanied by rain or thunderstorms, over parts of Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Cumilla, Noakhali, Chattogram and Cox's Bazar. River ports in these regions have been advised to hoist Cautionary Signal No. 1.
Meanwhile, the combined impact of the low-pressure system and spring tides has pushed water levels above danger marks in several southern rivers, inundating low-lying coastal areas.
The Bangladesh Water Development Board has urged residents in vulnerable coastal zones to remain alert as tidal flooding may continue during high tide.
