Mahdi Amin calls for increased US investment in Bangladesh
Prime Minister's Adviser and Spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office Dr Mahdi Amin has called on US entrepreneurs to invest more in Bangladesh.
He said the government is working to ensure equal opportunities, maintain policy stability and create a business-friendly environment to attract foreign investment.
He made the remarks at an event organised by the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) and the US embassy in Dhaka on Saturday, July 4, to mark the 250th anniversary of US independence.
Mahdi Amin said the government prioritises the private sector as the main driver of economic growth. All necessary policy support will be provided to facilitate investment.
He said the government is working to restore the confidence of foreign investors by ensuring transparency, accountability, good governance and the rule of law. Bangladesh offers significant investment potential due to its large domestic market, young workforce and growing middle class.
The prime minister's adviser said steps have been taken to improve the investment environment, including easing profit repatriation, adopting liberal economic policies, and offering tax benefits in economic zones, industrial parks and hi-tech parks. The government is committed to ensuring equal opportunities for both domestic and foreign investors, addressing past concerns about unfair competition.
Urging US companies to increase foreign direct investment (FDI), Mahdi Amin said they can play a larger role in Bangladesh's development through technology and skill transfer, job creation and partnerships with local industries.
He identified significant cooperation and investment potential in aviation, energy, ICT, textiles, pharmaceuticals, agro-based exports and flight engineering.
Mahdi Amin also stressed the need to transform 'brain drain' into 'brain circulation' by engaging skilled Bangladeshi professionals living in the US in the country's economic and technological development.
He called for closer collaboration between US companies and government policymakers to organise investment roadshows and explore new business opportunities in Bangladesh.
