Malaysia will begin recruiting workers from Bangladesh in phases from September, with up to 2,00,000 Bangladeshi workers expected to be hired within six months, State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam said.

He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a courtesy meeting with the Malaysian ambassador at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday (August 30).

According to the state minister, the recruitment process is expected to begin toward the end of September and be completed within six months. Of the total, 10,000 workers will be recruited at no cost to them, while the remaining workers will be hired through Malaysian-listed companies.

The minister said Bangladesh and Malaysia also discussed potential Malaysian investment in several sectors in Bangladesh, although he did not provide details on the proposed investments.

He added that the two sides did not discuss Bangladesh’s request regarding the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Malaysia.
