The cross-examination of Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former Inspector General of Police and a key witness, has commenced in the high-profile war crimes case involving Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. The case relates to crimes against humanity committed during the July-August 2024 movement.

Mamun's cross-examination began on Thursday at 11:35 a.m before the judicial panel of the International Crimes Tribunal-1, led by Chairman Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder.

The cross-examination is being conducted by state-appointed lawyer Md. Amir Hossain, representing the defense of Sheikh Hasina and Kamal. Mamun had partially testified as a key witness on September 2, and following a defense petition, the remaining testimony was scheduled for today.

During his testimony, Mamun revealed political influence and factionalism within the police force under the Awami League government. He also admitted to his involvement in the genocide carried out under the orders of Sheikh Hasina and Kamal during the July-August period, expressing remorse and seeking forgiveness.

To date, a total of 36 witnesses, including Mamun, have testified in the case. The witnesses have called for exemplary punishment for those responsible for the killings, including the former Prime Minister and Home Minister.

The tribunal formally framed charges against Sheikh Hasina, Kamal, and Mamun on July 10 and ordered the trial to proceed. The prosecution has brought five charges of crimes against humanity against the accused.

The official charge sheet spans 8,747 pages, comprising 2,018 pages of documentary evidence, 4,005 pages of seizure lists and supporting documents, and 2,724 pages detailing the victims. A total of 81 witnesses have been summoned. The tribunal’s investigation agency submitted its final report to the Chief Prosecutor on May 12.
