Man lynched over child rape attempt dies at Jhenaidah hospital

A man accused of attempting to rape a seven-year-old child was beaten to death by an angry mob in Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila on Thursday afternoon (June 4).

The deceased, identified as Billal Hossain, 40, was a rickshaw puller originally from Deoli village in Magura district who had been residing in Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila.

According to local sources, Billal allegedly lured the child to his room with the promise of sweets before attempting to sexually assault him. The child's screams drew neighbours to the scene. As Billal attempted to flee, locals apprehended him and subjected him to a severe mob beating.

Billal was rushed to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital in a critical condition.

Dr Uma Islam of the hospital's emergency department confirmed he sustained injuries across multiple parts of his body and was brought in in a life-threatening state. He succumbed to his injuries later that evening.

Gokul Chandra, officer-in-charge (Investigation) of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station, confirmed that residents beat Billal over the alleged attempted rape. The child's family subsequently filed a formal complaint at the Sadar Police Station under the Women and Child Abuse Act.

"Legal proceedings regarding the mob violence are now underway," OC Gokul Chandra said.
