'Mangal' dropped again, Charukala begins preparations for 'Ananda Shobhajatra'
The Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University has begun preparations for the Bengali New Year celebrations, once again avoiding the term 'Mangal Shobhajatra' and organising the event as 'Borshoboron Ananda Shobhajatra'.
Preparatory activities for Pahela Baishakh and Bengali New Year began on Monday, March 30, at the Faculty of Fine Arts in front of the Zainul Gallery, featuring drum beats and painting sessions.
The government has already announced nationwide programmes for the celebration of Bangla year 1433, which includes a 'Borshoboron Shobhajatra' organised by Dhaka University's Faculty of Fine Arts. This indicates that the former name 'Mangal Shobhajatra' has once again been omitted.
Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts Professor Azharul Islam said the arrangement is being made in continuation of tradition. According to him, the procession was originally called 'Borshoboron Ananda Shobhajatra', which later became known as 'Mangal Shobhajatra'. This time, they are returning to the original name and tradition, aiming to make the event more inclusive.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Sayma Haque Bidisha as chief guest. Ekushey Padak-winning artist Professor Abdus Sattar was present as special guest. Also present were the university proctor and faculty teachers and students.
The procession, which originated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in the 1980s, later became known as 'Mangal Shobhajatra' and received international recognition in 2016. In 2025, its name was changed to 'Borshoboron Ananda Shobhajatra' for the first time.
