The 20th anniversary of the death of Manik Chandra Saha, a freedom fighter and Ekushey Padak-winning journalist, is being observed today (January 15).

On this day in 2004, Manik Chandra Saha tragically lost his life in a heinous bomb attack carried out by miscreants near Khulna Press Club.

Manik Saha, renowned as BBC's Manik Saha, held multiple significant roles throughout his career. He served as the Senior Correspondent in Khulna for Dainik Sangbad and English Daily New Age, while also working as a part-time Correspondent for BBC Bangla. Before this, he was elected as the president of both the Khulna Press Club and Khulna Journalists Union. Additionally, Manik Saha played a pivotal role as the head of Khulna division for Ekushey Television, the country's first private terrestrial broadcaster, from its establishment until its closure.

The international community and the political sphere were engulfed in a wave of condemnation and protest following the brutal murder of Manik Saha.

On November 30, 2016, nine people were jailed for life for killing Manik but the family members and the journalist community rejected the verdict and demanded retrial and reinvestigation into the murder case. The journalist community in the country believes that the true motive behind this murder remains undisclosed.
