Mariam’s father blames brother-in-law for relationship with MP Nazrul

The father of Gazi Nazrul Islam’s second wife, Mariam Khatun, has blamed his own brother-in-law, Obaidur Rahman, for allegedly pushing his daughter into a relationship with the former Satkhira-4 MP.

Masum Billah made the allegation while speaking to reporters outside the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital around 11am on Monday (September 21), where he was waiting to receive Mariam’s body after an autopsy.

“My brother-in-law Obaidur is responsible for the situation today. He brought her into this path,” Masum said, alleging that his daughter was lured into the relationship with promises of money and was subsequently instigated to take her own life.

Masum said he had a good relationship with his daughter and that she had never complained to the family about any problems.

Police recovered Mariam’s body hanging from a flat on the third floor of the No. 5 building of NAM Bhaban in Dhaka on Sunday evening. After preliminary examination, the body was sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Police and the CID crime scene unit later collected evidence from the scene. Investigators also recovered several handwritten letters reportedly written by Mariam.
