A fire broke out at four warehouses storing cotton, rice, fertiliser and pesticides at Pullerhat Bazar in Jashore town, leaving one warehouse completely gutted and three others partially damaged.

The incident occurred at around 6:00pm on Friday, November 9.

Four units of the Jashore Fire Service, along with police and army personnel, managed to bring the fire under control after about one and a half hours.

Fire Service sources said the exact cause of the fire could not be confirmed immediately. However, Jashore Fire Service deputy director Jahangir Ahmed initially suspected that the fire may have originated from an electrical short circuit, adding that the blaze started from the cotton warehouse.

Mohammad Liton, owner of the cotton warehouse, said cotton worth approximately Tk 300,000 to Tk 400,000 stored in his facility was completely destroyed. Goods stored in the warehouses owned by Abdul Aziz and Iqbal were partially damaged.

Local residents and eyewitnesses said the coordinated efforts of the fire service, army and police helped prevent the fire from spreading further in the densely populated market area.

Initial estimates suggest total losses from the four warehouses may amount to around Tk 500,000 to Tk 600,000.
