Despite the Ministry of Environment's requests and a police ban, fireworks, firecrackers, and sky lanterns were set off to celebrate the English New Year and usher in 2025 in Dhaka. However, many residents have expressed dissatisfaction, claiming that the Ministry and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) only issued warnings and took little to no action. During the celebrations, there was a noticeable lack of police patrols and mobile courts to enforce the ban.

From the afternoon of Tuesday (December 31), children and teenagers began setting off fireworks and firecrackers in neighborhoods, streets, and rooftops. As the night progressed, the noise grew louder, and by midnight, the city was filled with the continuous sound of firecrackers.

Government authorities and law enforcement had issued repeated warnings against the use of fireworks, firecrackers, and sky lanterns. The Ministry of Environment had also planned to set up mobile courts to take action against violators. Furthermore, a writ petition was filed in the High Court seeking a ban on fireworks and firecrackers in public spaces, rooftops, and parks.

However, despite the government’s prohibition, there was no significant action taken by the authorities to enforce the ban. People in various parts of the capital reported seeing little police patrols, and firecrackers and fireworks were freely set off in many areas.

As a result, many residents expressed frustration over the excessive noise, especially children, elderly people, and the sick, who were disturbed by the sounds. Some people even voiced their anger on social media and questioned the actions of law enforcement.

Imran Ali, a resident of Mirpur, said, "The sound of firecrackers before midnight was so loud that it felt like the whole environment was shaking. It was impossible to stay calm at home."

Kamrul Hasan, a resident of Mohammadpur, said, "My mother is a heart patient, and the loud sounds of fireworks and firecrackers made her anxious, causing her pulse to rise repeatedly."

Despite the government’s ban on fireworks, firecrackers, and sky lanterns for New Year’s Eve, these restrictions were poorly enforced. The government had also prohibited public gatherings, parties, rallies, and cultural events in open spaces on this day.
