Meat sold in designated shops must carry DSCC inspection seal: Administrator

Meat sold at designated shops in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) areas must carry an official inspection seal from the city corporation’s health officials, DSCC Administrator Bir Muktijoddha Md Abdus Salam said.

He made the remarks after inaugurating a modern slaughterhouse in the capital's Hazaribagh Monday (August 31).

Abdus Salam said the seal would allow consumers to identify meat that has been inspected and certified by the city corporation.

“Every piece of meat must carry the Dhaka city corporation’s seal to confirm that it has been inspected. Meat sold without the seal will be seized, while action will be taken against shops selling meat from illegally slaughtered animals,” he said.

He also said animals could not be slaughtered at markets or other unauthorised locations outside designated slaughterhouses. Violators would face fines, while shops found selling meat from unauthorised slaughtering could be shut down.

According to the DSCC administrator, bringing meat from unknown sources makes it difficult to determine whether the animal was healthy, properly slaughtered or carrying any disease. It can also make it difficult to verify whether meat sold as beef actually comes from cattle rather than buffalo.

He said livestock must therefore be slaughtered at designated facilities, where health officials and staff will be present to oversee the process.

Abdus Salam warned that officials found absent from their assigned duties during slaughtering would face disciplinary action.
