Meghmallar quits Students' Union

Bangladesh Students' Union leaders Meghmallar Basu and Main Ahmed have resigned from the organisation, citing a potential conflict of interest after joining a new political platform.

The development was confirmed in a press release issued on Saturday (July 25), signed by the organisation's General Secretary, Shimul Kumbhakar.

According to the statement, the Central Committee accepted the resignation letters of Vice-President Main Ahmed and Education and Research Affairs Secretary Meghmallar Basu. It said both leaders had voluntarily stepped down after becoming associated with a new political platform, as holding leadership positions in two organisations simultaneously could create a conflict of interest and organisational contradictions, potentially affecting the activities and accountability of both organisations.

After reviewing the reasons behind their resignations and their current political positions, the Central Committee formally accepted their resignations.

In the same context, Central Committee Vice-President Nazifa Jannat was also relieved of her responsibilities in the organisation due to similar organisational considerations.

The Students' Union said the decisions were taken to uphold the organisation's ideological principles and organisational transparency. It noted that simultaneously holding policymaking positions in multiple organisations is inconsistent with the Union's constitution and organisational norms.

The organisation expressed appreciation for the contributions made by the outgoing leaders during their tenure and wished them success in their future political and personal endeavours.

The statement also reaffirmed the Bangladesh Students' Union's commitment to continuing its longstanding struggle for the right to education, secularism, democracy, anti-imperialism, and the establishment of an equitable and socialist Bangladesh.
