A mild earthquake rattled Dhaka and surrounding areas early Monday (August 17), with the epicentre located in Narsingdi’s Shibpur, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

The quake, measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale, was felt at around 5:32am, prompting brief concern among residents in parts of the capital. However, its low magnitude meant there was no immediate report of significant impact.

Data from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre showed that the epicentre was about 47 kilometres northeast of Dhaka, at a depth of 10 kilometres beneath the surface.

The shallow quake was noticeable in several parts of Dhaka because of its early-morning timing, but the tremor was brief and relatively weak. Authorities said the situation remained normal.

No casualties or damage have been reported so far. Local authorities have also received no reports of structural damage or other major disruption linked to the tremor.
