A Dhaka court acquitted 45 people, including BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas and BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Amanullah Aman, in two separate sabotage cases filed in 2013, officials confirmed.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan passed the order on Wednesday morning (December 17).

Defence lawyers, including Advocate Mohi Uddin Chowdhury and Advocate Abu Bakar Siddique, confirmed the court’s order to the media.

Earlier, both accused appeared in court and filed petitions for acquittal, which the court granted, clearing them of all charges in the cases registered with Paltan and Shahjahanpur police stations.

The cases originated in 2013 with allegations of illegal assembly, vehicle vandalism and sabotage at Malibagh intersection. Several defendants, including Mirza Abbas, were previously detained in connection with the cases.

Initially, 49 people were named in the two cases. Among them, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had already been acquitted earlier, and BNP leader Moudud Ahmed’s proceedings were dropped following his death. As a result, the court acquitted the remaining 45 accused on Wednesday.
