Mirza Abbas under intense observation, doctors to decide next steps today
Political Adviser to the prime minister and BNP standing committee Member Mirza Abbas remains under close observation at Evercare Hospital Dhaka after undergoing two brain surgeries.
Doctors are expected to decide on the next course of treatment on Saturday (March 14) after reviewing the results of several medical tests.
Abbas was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday evening after suddenly falling ill during iftar. Following medical examinations, physicians performed two surgeries on his brain on Friday.
According to doctors, the operations were successful and he is currently out of immediate danger. He suffered a stroke after blood flow to the brain was obstructed due to an infection. He is now on ventilator support and being kept under intensive observation.
Professor Dr. Md. Shahabuddin Talukder of the cardiology department, who is among the physicians treating him, said the stroke was caused by disrupted blood circulation in the brain. Plans to take Abbas to Singapore for treatment were initially considered, but his condition deteriorated, prompting doctors to conduct the surgeries in Dhaka instead.
Doctors will decide whether to remove him from ventilator support after reviewing test results. If his condition improves further, the option of transferring him abroad for advanced treatment may also be considered.
Abbas’s family has urged the public not to spread misinformation about his condition. His son, Mirza Yasir Abbas, said age and work pressure had recently weakened his father's physical condition.
He added that Abbas’s condition has improved somewhat following the two surgeries and preparations are in place to take him to Singapore if doctors advise it once he becomes stable.
On Friday, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited the hospital to inquire about Abbas’s health and spoke with doctors, directing them to ensure all necessary advanced treatment.
Senior BNP leaders, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan, also visited the hospital.
Abbas was elected as a member of parliament from the Dhaka-8 seat in the 13th parliamentary election but could not attend the inaugural session due to his illness.
His wife, Afroza Abbas, president of the BNP’s women’s wing Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal, has sought prayers from the public for his speedy recovery.
