Mirza Fakhrul calls on all concerned to work together to deal with floods
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called on all concerned ministries, departments and organizations to work together to deal with the flood situation caused by heavy rainfall and landslides in different parts of the country.
In his speech as the chairman at an inter-ministerial meeting held at the Cabinet Division meeting room at the Secretariat on Tuesday (July 14), he said that in the current situation, there is no alternative to coordinated initiatives to reduce the suffering of the people. Each ministry and organization must fulfill its respective responsibilities properly and provide relief and necessary services to the affected people quickly.
The minister said that the organizations concerned must work with utmost importance in rescue operations, relief distribution, healthcare, pure water supply and restoration of damaged infrastructure.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said in the meeting that the government is working all-out to deal with the floods under the Prime Minister's directives. He emphasized on ensuring transparency and accountability in relief distribution and said that assistance should reach the actual affected people without any irregularities.
Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury emphasized on creating an accurate database of the affected people. According to him, this will make the relief activities more orderly and effective. He also highlighted the need to keep the supply system and communication infrastructure operational.
Several important decisions were taken in the meeting to deal with post-flood rehabilitation and damage. These include conducting food assistance programs after assessing the actual damage after the water recedes, distributing new seeds among farmers, ensuring clean water supply, and strengthening healthcare to prevent diseases.
In addition, it has been decided to quickly repair the damaged roads under the LGED and quickly activate the highways and important roads under the Roads and Highways Department and related agencies.
Government sources said that the relevant ministries and agencies will continue the rescue, relief distribution, healthcare, and rehabilitation activities in a coordinated manner until the flood situation normalizes.
