BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, injuries and damage caused by the earthquake in various parts of the country. He conveyed his condolences in a post on his verified Facebook account on Friday November 21.

In his message, he wrote, ‘Dear countrymen, a strong earthquake has just been felt. We are deeply saddened by the casualties and damage. We pray for the forgiveness of the departed souls and for the quick recovery of the injured. We pray to Allah to protect us all. I hope you are careful and doing well. Stay safe—seek shelter safely and cautiously during an earthquake.’

Mirza Fakhrul also highlighted key awareness instructions on what to do during an earthquake.

If indoors:

Drop, Cover, Hold On—take shelter under a sturdy table or desk.

Stay away from windows, doors, glass, heavy furniture or refrigerators.

Do not use lifts.

Stay away from gas and fire.

If outdoors:

Move away from buildings, trees, electric wires and signboards.

Stand in an open space and keep your head down.

If in a vehicle:

Stop the vehicle and park at the roadside, but not under bridges, overpasses, buildings or trees.

Stay inside the vehicle until the shaking stops.

After the shaking stops:

Check gas, electricity and water lines.

If there is structural damage, exit the building safely.

Use stairs instead of lifts.

Gather family members and check for injuries.

Be prepared for aftershocks.

BNP’s secretary general has urged everyone to remain alert and aware during earthquake situations.
