Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir sworn in as 23rd President of Bangladesh

Newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was sworn in as the 23rd President of Bangladesh on Friday (August 21) at 7:30pm. Acting Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal administered the oath to the newly elected President at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban.

With the oath, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir formally assumed the highest constitutional office of the state.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram, Chief Justice Jubayer Rahman Chowdhury, cabinet members, members of parliament, foreign diplomats and senior officials of the civil and military administration were present at the ceremony.

Earlier, on Thursday (August 20), BNP candidate and former secretary general of the party Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected as the 23rd President of the country with 255 votes in the presidential election held at the Jatiya Sangsad. His rival, Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed, candidate of the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami, received 88 votes. A total of 343 out of 349 MPs cast their votes.

Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin declared Mirza Fakhrul victorious after the vote count. The Election Commission later issued a gazette notification declaring him elected as President.

A colourful oath-taking ceremony was arranged at Bangabhaban for the newly elected President. Special security and traffic measures had been put in place in and around Bangabhaban ahead of the event.
