Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir's nomination papers submitted for presidency

Nomination papers for BNP's nominated candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir have been submitted for the country's 23rd presidential election. BNP Standing Committee member Dr Abdul Moeen Khan submitted the papers to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Bhaban around 2:30pm on Thursday, August 13.

A delegation of senior BNP leaders was present at the Election Bhaban when the nomination papers were submitted on behalf of Mirza Fakhrul. Those present included Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, Whip Rokibul Islam Bakul, Mia Nuruddin Ahammed Opu, Akhtaruzzaman Mia, ABM Ashraf Uddin Nijan, Joint Secretaries Shahid Uddin Chowdhury and Habib Un Nabi Khan Sohel, among others.

Dr Abdul Moeen Khan signed as proposer, while Goyeshwar Chandra Roy acted as the seconder on the nomination papers. Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed was also present with the CEC.

Earlier on Thursday, BNP's National Standing Committee meeting held in front of the Prime Minister's Office at the Secretariat finalised Mirza Fakhrul as the party's candidate for the presidency. After the meeting, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi informed journalists of the decision.

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said after consultation with the party chairman and Prime Minister, it was decided to make Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir BNP's candidate for the presidential election. He has been serving as the party's secretary general for a long time.

Meanwhile, LDP Chairman Colonel (retd.) Oli Ahmed is contesting as the candidate of the 11-party alliance, the opposition in parliament. Earlier, alliance coordinator and Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad submitted nomination papers on behalf of Oli Ahmed.

According to the Election Commission's schedule, the presidential election will be held on August 20. After scrutiny of nomination papers, candidates have the opportunity to withdraw until August 18. Voting will take place at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
