President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is set to visit his home district of Thakurgaon for the first time since taking office, beginning a two-day tour on Sunday (September 6).

The president is scheduled to leave Dhaka by helicopter around 10am and land at the Mohammad Ali Stadium in Thakurgaon. He will then head to the district circuit house, where he will receive a guard of honour from the armed forces.

Fakhrul will later visit his parents’ graves at the family cemetery and offer prayers before attending a civic reception organised by members of civil society at the large field of Thakurgaon Government Boys’ High School in the afternoon.

He will have lunch and take a short rest at his family home in Kalibari before joining the reception.

On Monday, the second day of his visit, the president will lay the foundation stone for the long-awaited Thakurgaon University in the Jamalpur area of Sadar upazila, along the Thakurgaon-Pirganj highway.

He will return to his residence for lunch and a brief rest before leaving Thakurgaon by helicopter for Dhaka.

Security has been tightened across the district ahead of the presidential visit. Thakurgaon Superintendent of Police Md Belal Hossain said comprehensive security measures had been in place since September 5, with heightened security planned at the event venues, along travel routes and in surrounding areas.
