Mithu placed on 5-day remand over health sector corruption
A Dhaka court on Thursday granted a five-day remand for Motazzarul Islam Mithu in connection with a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over the alleged accumulation of illegal wealth.
Judge Sabbir Faiz of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Court issued the order after rejecting Mithu's bail petition. The ACC had sought a 10-day remand for interrogation.
Mithu, who has been accused of being a key figure behind widespread corruption and irregularities in the health sector under the previous Awami League government, was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of police in Dhaka on September 11.
Following his arrest, Mithu was produced before the court the same day, where a 10-day remand was sought. His legal counsel applied for bail, which was subsequently denied. The court then ordered him to be sent to jail and scheduled today’s hearing to consider both remand and bail petitions.
According to the ACC, Mithu illegally amassed assets worth Tk 75 crore beyond his known sources of income. The case is part of the commission's ongoing investigation into high-level corruption in public institutions.
