Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has expressed deep concern over criminal activity in the capital’s Mohammadpur area, pledging that the government will bring the locality under full control and eliminate offenders, describing it as a long-standing “safe haven for criminals.”

Speaking at the Secretariat on Saturday (June 20) after awarding police personnel for their contributions to law and order, the minister said the government is working at a faster pace than previous administrations to improve the security situation, and the progress is already visible.

He said initiatives have been taken through Interpol, which led to the arrest of former IGP Benazir Ahmed in Dubai. “All necessary documents, including cases against him, have been sent to that country. We hope he will be returned to Bangladesh after due legal procedures,” he added.

The minister also said there had been a perception that the police force had become inactive, but it has now regained its effectiveness.

He further noted that after the formation of an elected government, police personnel are performing their duties with greater responsibility, which is why their commendable work is being formally recognised and rewarded.
