Mohammed Shahabuddin to leave Bangabhaban today

Former President Md Shahabuddin is set to formally vacate Bangabhaban on Sunday (July 26), two days after stepping down from office, before moving with his family to his private residence in Gulshan. He is also expected to travel abroad shortly for medical treatment following a deterioration in his health.

In an interview with a local media outlet on Saturday, Shahabuddin said he would likely travel to Singapore or Bangkok for advanced treatment.

He noted that doctors at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) had advised him to seek medical care overseas due to complications arising from his illness.

The former president also said his wife, Rebecca Sultana, is unwell and will accompany him for treatment abroad.

He added that preparations for leaving the presidential residence had been underway for several days, with his personal belongings already transferred to his Gulshan home.

Cleaning and renovation work at the residence has also been completed ahead of the move.

Shahabuddin submitted his resignation to Speaker of the National Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed on Friday afternoon. Later that day, the Speaker confirmed receiving the resignation letter during a press briefing at the Parliament's oath room and announced that, in accordance with the Constitution, he had assumed the responsibilities of Acting President.

Md Shahabuddin was sworn in as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023, for a five-year term that was scheduled to run until April 2028. However, he stepped down nearly two years before the completion of his tenure, citing health complications as the reason for his resignation.
