On behalf of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, a party delegation led by Standing Committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan paid tribute to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar on Friday, December 26.

The tribute was paid at 5:06 pm as per party decision, as Tarique Rahman’s motorcade could not reach the memorial before sunset due to heavy crowd congestion along the route. According to protocol, homage at the main altar must be offered before sunset.

Party leaders said Tarique Rahman was on the way to the memorial, but the overwhelming presence of leaders and activists made timely arrival impossible.

Those present during the tribute included BNP Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Chairperson’s Advisory Council member Amanullah Aman, Dhaka district BNP president Khandaker Abu Ashfaq and general secretary Advocate Nipun Roy Chowdhury.

Also present were Dr Dewana Mohammad Salahuddin, Tamiz Uddin, Yasin Ferdous Murad, Ayub Khan and retired Major General Fazle Elahi Akab.

Earlier, Tarique Rahman visited the grave of his father, late president Ziaur Rahman, at Zia Udyan in the capital at 4:40 pm, where he placed wreaths and offered prayers before leaving for Savar.
