Monsoon depression over Bay of Bengal, signal No 3 at four sea ports
The low-pressure area over the northwestern Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas has intensified into a monsoon depression. It is currently located over the southwestern part of Bangladesh, the West Bengal coast and the adjoining northwestern Bay of Bengal, and may move further northwest, the Met Office said.
The information was provided in a warning for sea ports on Monday, August 17. The notice, signed by meteorologist Dr Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik, said the depression could bring squally winds over coastal areas, the North Bay and the sea ports.
Given the situation, the Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra sea ports have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal No 3. Fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
The Met Office said the depression's position and strength may change as it moves northwest, which could alter weather conditions in coastal areas.
The sea may become rough, and squally winds and rainfall may increase in coastal areas. Vessels in the sea and ports have been advised to monitor the latest weather conditions.
The Met Office said new warnings may be issued depending on the depression's path and strength. All concerned have been urged to remain alert while signal No 3 remains in place at all four sea ports.
